Drawing from the magic lantern and the evolution of the language and technique of animation, where fantasy and animistic desires, are created through highly rigid and hierarchical modes of production and optical engineering, the diverse found cartoon footage is edited and transformed to paint a picture of a city plunged in darkness, where inhabitants engage in various forms of escapism and confrontation. The plot of the film starts in the guise of a linear narrative where two young adults go out to dance, while a younger child is left behind to devolve into increasingly tempestuous dreams. * Now I am a car driving during a blackout. My headlights animate the city, the shadows of its extinguished streetlights dancing on the facades of dilapidated buildings. The city is a processor, organizing the flow of all things living and dead. Pulsating light brings objects to life; everything is in motion. The architecture is smooth, liquid, smart. The city is also a grinding halt, screeching brakes, and burnt tires. It is smashed windows and broken teeth, lockups and lights out. The relationship between artificial light, motion capture, and crowd control is, like so much hard science, phantasmagoria amok. This is a film about the alchemy of light and the rhythms of things made to flow. All of Your Stars Are but Dust on My Shoes (2021) tracks the public administration of light and darkness as an essential policing tool. The video moves between cities like New York and Paris, with the artist’s native Beirut setting the central pulse. Creating an associative genealogy that moves from whale oil lamps to gas lanterns to LED bulbs, from blackouts to curfews, the video is comprised of found footage and material from the artist’s own phone. Layering, splicing, and confronting disparate kinds of sound and image, Aivazian generates a sensorial meditation on how the fundamentals of human vision—light hitting the retina—were mechanized into tools that capture our movements, be it in everyday life or on screen. In this exhibition, the new video joins iterations of two other recent works by the artist. Together, the three works are configured as a larger installation that Aivazian has tailored to the architecture of the Ren and synchronized along a cyclical sequence. Wrapping the gallery walls in a grid drawn in chalk—and pelted with chalk balls—1440 Couchers de Soleil par 24 Heures [1440 Sunsets per 24 Hours] (2017/2021) sets the stage with an iconography of motion tracking and heat maps shared by sports metrics and predictive policing. (This latest iteration incorporates four maps from Chicago based on predictive and recorded crime data.) Drawing from the advent of public lighting as a cornerstone for a lasting regime of quantification, calculation, and standardization, Aivazian has created a wireframe environment spotted with floodlights as infrastructural allusions to streets and stadiums. In a second video, Prometheus (2019), fire is the main trans-historical motor, as it observes two paradigm shifts in American hard and soft power: the United States’ assault on Iraq in 1990 and the gold-medal-winning “Dream Team” of the 1992 Olympics, populated by NBA superstars. In an agile flow of found footage, Aivazian streams and cuts between ancient fires, resource extraction, and technological warfare—following a fire only momentarily contained, only partially domesticated, but repeatedly mobilized, since its theft from the heights of Mount Olympus, to its unleashing on the oil fields of Kuwait. These two videos further Aivazian’s attraction to working with found footage, allowing for stories to unfold through textures of sound, divergent image resolutions and orientations, and evolving forms of machinic visualizations. In these works, history is an omnipresent hum, conjuring and bumping up against degraded futures and persistent efforts of survival. Through his mode of editing and juxtaposing without assigning hierarchy to the different sources of imagery, the artist seeks to mobilize affect and analysis and channel them through everyday forms. They revisited the glasshouse cubicles that had once separated co-workers, and quelled unruly vegetation. The agricultural lands once surrounding the building had turned into forests of rebar stems. They began planning for a future that was thought to have come and gone. They looked to ancient artefacts and survivor insects for clues to decipher their present ailments, to disentangle their inherited back pain, to unlearn decades of bad office posture. They reinvented sacrificial practices to conjure rain, fertility, fortune, and erected scarecrow talismans to ward off pestilence and tribulation. They gathered by the water coolers, claiming that sociality always coalesced on the banks of sweet water bodies.From headquarters windowless like casinos, like IKEA, like Mission Control, forces mobilized against them, synchronizing all things. From outer space to desktops, and from toxic assets to trading floors, distinctions between lived and real time were being eroded. And so, they countered by mobilizing the night: nocturnal taxi drivers, street vendors, graveyard shift cleaners. They deployed machine commands of their own, communicating via tickers and video signals, with hardware collected from the market under the bridge. We are fossils of energy, they said, we are liquid. We are thinking, feeling substance. a scenography driven by contrary and complimentary modern impulses: a drive to kill, a compulsion to conserve and a desire to animate. It consists of fragmented hybrids; mythical animals, furniture, architectural icons and luxury goods. Juxtaposing signs of the zoo and the museum, this work probes their shared scopic impulse as modern enclosures designed to hierarchize life and culture by classification. Getting confused between dead and living, fantasy and fact, human and non-human, could place one on the wrong side of history, relegated to believing in ghosts and monsters. &nbsp; But ghosts and monsters are both wonderful storytellers, and uncompromising historians with a naughty sense of humour. They tell us that it is always a paper-thin line between looting and decorating, pillage and knowledge, plinths and prisons, skinning and sun-tanning, colony and summer camp, gold rush and Black Friday. The team’s unquestionable dominance coincided with, and reflected, a new era of global politics, embodied in the U.S technological and environmental assault on Iraq a year prior. Aivazian’s film draws parallels between these two events as paradigm shifts in hard and soft power, exploring the celebration of violence that occurs in the passing of the torch, both literal and metaphorical. Fire is the main trans-historical narrative motor here, a fire only momentarily contained, only partially domesticated, but repeatedly mobilised, since its theft from the heights of Mount Olympus, to its unleashing on the oil fields of Kuwait. Using mainly found footage, the film splices multiple scales, from lighting speed technological warfare, to unfathomably permanent environmental damage, from the lighting of ancient fires by channeling solar explosions occurred light years in the past, to grains of sand speckled with the chemical warfare testing the future. With a particular focus on the increasing difficulty to differentiate between populations of colonies, war zones, and ghettoes, or to clearly delineate the territorial boundaries between them, Aivazian looks at the preemptive and corrective regimes triggered by the back and forth passage between the state of law and the state of exception.
